Five days is the point at which a camping safari stops feeling like a dash and starts feeling like a journey. There is room here for a full day in Tarangire, two nights within reach of the Serengeti plains, and a crater morning to close on.
Because you are sleeping in and beside the parks, the best hours of the day belong to game viewing rather than driving to it. Mornings begin before the light does; evenings end around a fire with the day's sightings retold.
The vehicle is private and the guide is yours, so the route bends daily to where the wildlife has moved. Camping keeps the cost honest without trimming a single park from the itinerary.
Itinerary & highlights
Day 1
Arusha to Tarangire
Depart Arusha for Tarangire National Park and spend the day on game drives along the river, where elephant herds gather beneath the baobabs, before overnighting at camp.
Day 2
Tarangire to the Serengeti
Continue west through the Ngorongoro Highlands, with the crater viewpoint en route, arriving on the Serengeti plains in time for an afternoon safari.
Day 3
A full day in the Serengeti
Flexible game drives shaped by where the wildlife is moving, from big cats in the valley and plains game across the short grass, and long unhurried sittings when something develops.
Day 4
Serengeti to Ngorongoro
A final Serengeti morning drive, then transfer east to the Ngorongoro area for your last night under canvas on the highlands.
Day 5
Crater floor and return
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full morning of game viewing before ascending and driving back to Arusha.
